The CP2 commute: where to live if you work at Venture Global CP2
CP2 sits next to Calcasieu Pass near Cameron, at the bottom of LA-27. Cameron Parish has very little housing, so most crews live in Cameron, Hackberry, Sulphur, Carlyss or Lake Charles and drive south every shift. A federal study for the project put Lake Charles at about a one-hour commute (source).
Rough drive times (estimates)
| Cameron | ~10–15 min |
| Hackberry | ~40–50 min |
| Carlyss | ~55–65 min |
| Sulphur | ~60–70 min |
| Lake Charles | ~60–75 min |
| Westlake | ~65–75 min |
| Moss Bluff | ~75–90 min |
Drive times are rough one-way estimates for normal traffic, not measured routes. Shift-change traffic, weather, the Cameron ferry and which gate you use can add a lot.
How to choose
- Cameron: the shortest drive, but almost no services. Groceries and laundry mean a trip north. RV parks like Cameron Park fill up.
- Hackberry: a middle option with limited supply.
- Sulphur/Carlyss: more RV parks and stores, and you're already on LA-27.
- Lake Charles: the most hotels and services, but the longest daily drive. On 10-12s that's an extra 1–2 hours a day.
Tips
- Drive the route at shift-change time before you sign a lease.
- Ask whether your contractor runs a bus or park-and-ride. Some parks also advertise one.
- LA-27 runs through low marsh. Watch for road flooding during storms.
